We have all been there. Long days outside working in the yard. That long over due vacation where we spend all day on the beach soaking in the rays. Or simply just the first nice day of the year capitalizing on the outdoor time with family and friends. Every one of us has had that day we can’t wait to get outside and enjoy the sun, but why is it that after those days we feel the overwhelming sense of exhaustion and just can’t wait to sleep afterwords? Well there are a few, so let’s take a look.

For starters, let’s address the obvious one. Energy depletion. When the sun is out, and the temps are rising, it’s just simply more enjoyable to be outdoors. We find ourselves standing more, walking more, moving our bodies more. All of this will lead to more energy burn, and in turn lead us to be more exhausted at the end of the day.

The next one, which is also pretty obvious is dehydration. When it’s hotter outside, and the sun is out we sweat more. This drains our body of precious water, sodium, and electrolytes. When the body becomes dehydrated, the blood thickens, leading the heart to have to work a lot harder to move blood around the body. This extra internal effort leads us to feel more exhausted at the end of the day. So drink up! But don’t be fooled. Leading science has proven, while just drinking water is important, sometimes it is not enough. As we referenced in our post about hydration, just water doesn’t always replenish the body of what it’s loosing when we sweat. Consider a sports drink, hydration powder, or something to also help to refuel the body of the much needed electrolytes, and sodium its loosing during those long sunny days spent outside.

A lesser thought of fact is your body is cranking in 3rd gear when the temperatures climb and the sun is out. What do we mean, well, your body has the best natural thermostat. When it’s colder, or hotter in the external environment your body goes into overdrive to compensate for the differing temperatures and maintain a consistent internal temperature. While it’s doing this your body is burning through energy even if you’re just laying down, and also increasing its metabolism. This won’t feel obvious throughout the day, but it’s important to keep in mind as you soak up the rays.

Now it’s not all bad! The warmer days come with a bunch of benefits as well. The much needed Vitamin D we get from the sun which is incredible for our immune systems, and has been widely shown to improve mood and mental health. It is also great for getting us moving! We become much less sedentary as the weather turns nice, and the sun shines, this is never a negative for anyone! Just be sure as you make your way out the door to soak up the rays, keep in mind proper hydration, and nutrition to keep your body fueled and prepared for the stress the outside factors put on it.

We like a solid hydration powder like the one from our friends at Promix to keep us hydrated and rolling throughout the day. Also their BCAA powder is a good addition. Mix these two together to really give yourself an edge up on the post sun exhaustion.
